Romantic Depression

March 14, 2020 - May 9, 2020

THE CLUB is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Naoya Inose “Romantic Depression”, introducing his most recent works inspired from his research trip to Iceland and its dynamic scenery. The exhibition features his iconic Monolith and Penguin series, as well as new series depicting television color bars. The works evoke apocalyptic landscapes highlighting the chaotic modern society which Naoya finds it depressing yet romantic at the same time.

“Romanticist paintings and depression have always been close together. I guess the romance is about finding the slightest hope and beauty in despair and emptiness. I believe many of us living today know that feeling. As I am one of them, I would like you to see my works and share the way I see this through my own filter.”
― Naoya Inose

The artist statement by Naoya Inose and the essay by Lena Flitsch, curator of Modern & Contemporary Art at Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, written specially for this exhibiton are now available from the link below.
